Speaker: Santiago Arango Pineros

Abstract: I will explain (the statement) of one of my favorite theorems: Mazur's theorem on the possible torsion subgroups of the rational points of an elliptic curve, defined over the field of rational numbers. In particular, I will introduce each of the words in the previous sentence. You will only need to know high school plane geometry to understand 90% of the talk. For the remaining 10%, I will explain the amazing idea of the proof.
