I will discuss the notion of a classical field theory as understood by mathematicians and then go over a number of examples: sigma models, gauge theories, bosonic strings, relativistic particles...
The talk will be non-technical and more focused on ideas and interpretations. It will also serve as a juxtaposition to upcoming talks on QFT by Ben Heidenreich.
