Abstract: In this informal lecture I will discuss some aspects of the analysis of nonlinear wave equations admitting soliton like solutions. Roughly speaking solitons are solutions to the equation that maintain some coherent structure over time, for instance time-independent or time-periodic solutions. It has long been understood that they play an important role in understanding the nonlinear flow. I will take a dynamical systems point of view and describe some known results and open directions.
