Moduli spaces of elliptic surfaces

I'll describe some general aspects of the theory of moduli spaces in algebraic geometry, including examples. I'll then discuss current joint work on moduli spaces of elliptic surfaces over a curve C, which are pairs (g: X--> C, S), for g a proper morphism with fibers generically smooth curves of genus one and S a section of g.
