Measured foliations

We will define measured foliations with singularities on a compact surface. What kind of curves are length minimizing and how do they sit in a foliation? What changes if we allow to deform a foliation? And finally we will mention how extending foliation from an annulus gives a connection between length of an arc and its intersection with the annulus.
