The intersection of a complex algebraic surface and a small sphere around an isolated singularity is a 3-manifold called the link of the singularity. We will discuss an explicit description of the link in terms of a resolution of the singularity and explain a key step, Mumford's plumbing fixture. We will then apply this technique to identify the links of singularities in specific examples.
