Free groups, surface groups, and the fundamental groups of 3-manifolds have lots of finite quotients. These quotients define a natural topology on the groups that lets us distinguish them from other groups using only the data of finite quotients. We will survey examples and theorems, before discussing a connection between finite quotients of fibered, hyperbolic 3-manifolds and the congruence topology on mapping class groups.
