We will give a broad overview of examples of different categories of surface singularities: (1) potential constructions of singularities like hypersurfaces, cones, and quotients; (2) the classes of singularities relevant to the minimal model program, including canonical, log terminal, and log canonical; and (3) rational singularities and classes of singularities relevant to vanishing theorems and cohomological conditions. If time, we will relate the different notions to each other.
