Math and Stat (and related) challenges

  • Putnam Exam. The exam is held each December across the US and Canada. Students have the option to prepare for the exam by taking the 1-credit course Math 491A, where interesting math is taught, along with problem solving skills. Contact Franz Pedit if you are interested in taking the Putnam exam (or joining Math 491A).  Our team has had much success over the years, including placing 26th in 2023, 33rd in 2024, and 46th in 2017, out of over 475 participating colleges and universities. In 2025, we achieved our best result to date: the team placed 14th, besting all other public universities except for UC Berkeley and one or two others.  The team was led by strong results from Son Pham, Owen Bechtel, Garrett Hinkley, Patrick Maloyan, Nicholas Mazzoni, and Tyler Fengya.
  • Math Competition. Held each spring, this competition is open to all Freshmen and Sophomores on campus.
  • Five College DataFest
  • Hack(H)er413: hackathon and career fair.
  • UMass Integration Bee, sponsored by the Integrated Math Majors Club
