Day One Data Collection Complete: Uncovering IV Smart Pump Usability Insights
On the first day of our study, the Elaine Marieb Center team observed critical-care nurses as they navigated four distinct IV smart pumps under simulated medication‐programming scenarios. By pairing Tobii eye-tracking glasses with heart-rate monitoring, we captured both visual attention patterns and physiological responses—providing a multifaceted view of how nurses interact with device prompts, menus, and error alerts. Early observations reveal clear differences in task flow efficiency and cognitive load across pump models, and participants’ real-time feedback has already highlighted key opportunities to streamline interface design. We’re excited to delve deeper into this rich dataset and translate these findings into actionable recommendations for safer, more intuitive pump systems.
