Pilot Project Goal: Improve chronic pain assessment among people who might be suffering pain silently in their beds.
Chronic pain is one of the most expensive health problems in the US. It is also a prevalent symptom of people with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) that often goes undetected and untreated due to cognitive impairments and a reduced ability to communicate with caregivers. Dr. Joohyun Chung and Dr. Xian Du’s project, With an Unobtrusive Wearable EDA Sensor and Video Recorded Body Movements to Assess Chronic Pain Among People with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias, addressed the need for innovative methods for pain management in this population. The Chung-Du team has developed wearable pain monitoring systems that are non-intrusive and convenient for adults with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Their aim is to prevent chronic pain in this population from being overlooked and untreated.
