Development and usability test of a tablet-based lifestyle modification intervention for Chinese older adults with osteoarthritis

Pilot Project Goal: Develop culturally sensitive and behavioral therapy-based strategies to improve Osteoarthritis in Asian older adults

Osteoarthritis (OA) is highly prevalent, affecting 1.5 million Asians in the United States. Current lifestyle modification interventions are known as the best strategy for treating OA, but they fail to consistently meet the needs of Asian adults.  This is partly due to their lack of active engagement with and long-term adherence to the recommended lifestyle modifications. Dr. Jeungok Choi and Dr. Yeonsik Noh’s project, Development and Usability Test of a Tablet-Based Lifestyle Modification Intervention for Chinese Older Adults with Osteoarthritisdeveloped a cognitive behavioral therapy-based application targeting Chinese older adults, who make up 23% of the United States Asian population. The approach centers on a culturally sensitive mini-tablet guided intervention, with a video conferencing tool. The Choi-Noh team determined that tablets combined with cultural awareness are highly effective in ensuring long-term adherence to lifestyle modification changes.
