Internship Opportunities at the Elaine Marieb Center for Nursing and Engineering Innovation

The Elaine Marieb Center for Nursing and Engineering Innovation (EMCNEI) offers undergraduate and graduate students a unique opportunity to step into the future of healthcare. Our summer internship program brings together students from nursing, engineering, computer science, business, and beyond to collaborate on real-world projects that sit at the intersection of patient care and innovation.

Interns don’t just assist with projects, they become active contributors. From working with robotics in the lab to helping design tools that improve nursing workflows, our interns experience firsthand how interdisciplinary collaboration drives meaningful change. Interns work on campus for ten weeks in paid internships, ensuring they gain both valuable experience and financial support while contributing to innovative projects.

What We Offer:

  • Hands-On Research & Projects – Work directly with nurses and engineers on applied projects that tackle healthcare challenges.

  • Professional Development – Participate in workshops and trainings in partnership with the UMass Institute for Applied Life Sciences (IALS), including sessions on career development, leadership, and personal strengths.

  • Mentorship & Collaboration – Learn from faculty, graduate students, and peers while gaining exposure to diverse perspectives in healthcare and engineering.

  • Creative Challenges – Engage in team-based activities, like design contests and innovation challenges, that sharpen problem-solving skills in a fun, collaborative environment.

💬 As nursing intern Bryanna Breault shared, “Being a part of EMCNEI this summer has really opened my eyes to just how diverse nursing can be and how working with people from different disciplines can help improve the quality of care nurses give.”

💬 Computer science intern Aayush Dehekrar reflected, “I used to think that a single person can do anything if they put their mind to it, but this internship taught me that when people from interdisciplinary streams come together, that’s how they can change the world.”

Our program is designed to expand both professional and personal growth. Whether it’s gaining technical skills, discovering new career paths, or learning how to apply classroom knowledge in real-world healthcare settings, EMCNEI interns leave with experiences that prepare them for the next step in their careers.
