Working with Cutting-Edge EMCNEI Researchers to Solve Healthcare Challenges

In the summer of 2024, the Elaine Marieb Center for Nursing and Engineering Innovation (EMCNEI) will be joining the Institute for Advanced Life Sciences (IALS) in offering UMass Amherst undergraduate students paid Core Summer Internships. Housed in UMass Amherst’s own Life Science Laboratories, the IALS and the Core facilities aim to use state-of-the-art technology and methodology to further research that enhances human health and well-being with the use of applied science.  In keeping with that aim, EMCNEI supports innovative responses to healthcare product and process challenges that rely simultaneously on nursing and engineering perspectives.  The idea behind this collaborative nurse-engineer research is that by working together, nurses and engineers can more effectively resolve gaps in knowledge or technology that prevent the delivery of equitable and efficient healthcare.  This summer, our EMCNEI Core interns will be working alongside cutting-edge EMCNEI supported researchers at Springfield’s Baystate Health Medical Center to identify clinical healthcare needs and create product prototypes that fill those needs, participating in the development of a novel blood pressure management system that uses a non-invasive cardiography device with the Baystate Health Clinic, and helping to determine how transportation needs affect the health of pregnant Black women, who are disproportionately likely to suffer morbidity and mortality during pregnancy.   And along with other Core Interns, they’ll be learning ‘soft skills’, or career-related people skills such as presentation, public speaking, and networking; they’ll have the chance to immediately put the networking skills into practice when they meet former CSI Interns that are near-career.
