EMCNEI Overview Video

Our overview video spotlights our research at the intersection of nursing and engineering. From IV Smart Pump safety enhancements to the integration of robotics in healthcare, faculty, researchers, and interns showcased their innovative projects, captured in a dynamic introductory video highlighting the Center's achievements and future vision.

On July 27, 2023, the Center welcomed the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and New Media News TV to UMass Amherst. New Media News partners with the AACN “to produce network-quality video programming to get messages across for reaching out to the public.” They filmed Center faculty, staff, and collaborators as they discussed Center research projects and methodologies in the Elaine Marieb College of Nursing Simulation lab and at other locations across campus.

Graduate researchers Gina Georgadarellis, MS, and Seonhun (Hoon) Lee, MS, were present, as were summer interns Marco Vital, David Pinero-Jacome, Ben Shih ‘25, and Asmita Deb ‘25. Center post-doctoral researcher Dr. Jeannine Blake, RN, explained her program of research, which focuses on the flow rates of and potential safety improvements to IV Smart Pumps. The project team includes her mentor, engineering researcher Dr. Juan Jiménez. Dr. Cidàlia Vital, RN, of Baystate Health discussed the Center’s collaboration with the Baystate Health System, which enables laboratory research, such as the potential use of robotics in healthcare to be safely tested in the real-world hospital setting, stating, “Karen Giuliano and I have talked about making one of our units an innovation hub so that we can change the way one unit is doing the work, and then hopefully do that across the organization.”

The film created by AACN-TV and New Media News showcases the Center’s collaborations on campus and off and includes a conversation with co-directors Dr. Karen Giuliano, RN and Dr. Frank Sup about the importance of sharing the interdisciplinary nurse-engineer approach with under-graduate and graduate students. The result was a concise film that provided highlights from the Center’s achievements thus far and a view of the Center’s future.
