In his first few weeks, Chancellor Javier Reyes visited the university’s colleges and departments to immerse himself in the varied and broad research on the UMass Amherst campus, and the Elaine Marieb Center for Nursing and Engineering Innovation was honored to have him stop by.
Chancellor Reyes’ visit occurred during our American Association of Colleges of Nursing and New Media News TV (AACN- TV) filming session, and the Chancellor observed graduate students and summer interns in action demonstrating the work of the Center. The Center’s mission (to promote innovative and interdisciplinary healthcare research) came to life as students and researchers from the College of Nursing and the College of Engineering worked together.
Chancellor Reyes’ visit underscored the Center’s dedication to advancing knowledge and making a tangible impact on society within the UMass Amherst community. He heard from our student researchers about the work they have been doing with us; our Core Summer Interns discussed their internships and the UMass Eureka! program, which promotes the involvement of girls in STEM. The interns designed and implemented a workshop for the eighth-grade Eureka! scholars that introduced them to the nurse-engineer concept, and potential uses of robotics in healthcare, and showed them how to measure vital signs.
