About Shira Epstein
Shira Epstein holds a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California and a Master's in Computer Science from UMass Amherst. As an undergraduate, lacking access to a makerspace, she created a workshop in her dorm room (not recommended--see photo below). She first encountered makerspaces first at All Hands Active in Ann Arbor, MI, and later at Sector67 in Madison, WI, where she spent five years working on diverse projects including a multi-channel telegraph player that reads out book snippets and a series of disassemblable polyhedra composed of 3d printed magnetic tiles. At UMass Amherst, she is a lecturer in the Electrical & Computer Engineering department and serves as a course coordinator for Senior Design Project. In 2019 she launched the UMass Amherst Makerspace in her primary role as Director of Campus Makerspaces.
