David Bartley ’56, ’61MEd, ’88PhD died in June 2023 at age 88. A walk-on-turned-star basketball player at UMass, Bartley went on to a storied career in public service, becoming Massachusetts’s youngest Speaker of the House, and president of Holyoke Community College (HCC) for nearly three decades.

Bartley was a lifelong resident of Holyoke and graduated from HCC in 1954. A class at UMass first introduced him to Holyoke state senator Michael Donahue, who became his political mentor; he later returned for his master’s and doctorate in education. At the State House, Bartley authored a landmark law requiring schools to provide programs for equal access to all disabled students, which served as a model for federal legislation. He went on to become the only community college president in Massachusetts who had been a student at the same school and led HCC for 29 years.

Despite his many accomplishments, Bartley remained down-to-earth, dedicated to his family and his Catholic faith. “He was gregarious, but he wasn’t flashy,” says his son Myles Bartley. “He was modest about most things—maybe with the exception of his golf game.”

Even late in life, Bartley stayed active as a skier and a golfer—proud of a single-digit handicap and a recent hole in one—and continued to take his family to sports games at UMass, where he was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2005.

A ‘Spacious Intelligence’

John Charles Campbell ’67MS, a nature lover and pioneer in the development of satellite technology, died in May 2023 at age 85. Campbell earned a master’s in physics at UMass, before working for 35 years at California’s Santa Barbara Research Center (SBRC), where he helped conduct vital tests on the optical system for Landsat, an earth-viewing satellite first launched in 1972.

At SBRC, Campbell tested and calibrated multiple generations of the pioneering multispectral scanner (MSS) sensors, the scans of which have been vital in helping better understand climate change. He also assisted other missions to explore the earth’s land, sea, and weather systems. In addition to his work in physics, Campbell received a Rockefeller Fellowship to bridge the gap between scientists and theologians, and a master’s in divinity from Union Theological Seminary.

“He possessed spacious intelligence and a subtle sense of humor,” his wife, Anna Campbell, said in a memorial. For one of their first dates, Campbell invited her to climb Oregon’s Mount Hood and they “became best friends.” He later served as a trail guide in the Adirondacks. “John loved to travel, taking his family on adventurous vacations,” Anna wrote. Together, they traveled to 33 countries.

A light in the world

Ann-Patrice M. Hickey ’83PhD, software programmer, activist, and general scholar of life, died August 7, 2023.

Hickey’s bio on X (the site formerly known as Twitter) reads: “Engineer, Neuroscientist, System Theorist, Writer, Musician, Sculptor, Programmer, Film Maker, Poet, Feminist, Ecologist,” and it only ends there because of the character limit.

Hickey, who already had a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a master’s in socio-environmental engineering, came to UMass Amherst to earn a PhD in psychology and neuroscience. Guided by a commitment to equality and human rights, she took a job with CAST, a nonprofit education research organization, where she met her future wife of 33 years, C. Lynn Chambers. After leaving CAST, Hickey founded her own company, Eden Design, producing software to help children with disabilities understand mathematical concepts.

She was a devoted activist and community leader, as well as a proponent of “true democracy,” as she stated in a Gloucester Daily Times interview about her possible run for Rockport selectman. Her broad interests encompassed everything from music, cooking, and literature to history, education, and ecology, and she volunteered her skills to many local organizations as a videographer, animator, musician, writer, and web developer. She even served as an assistant lighthouse keeper, making literal the light she brought to the world.

‘Tell me your story’

Ruth Edmonds Hill ’46, coordinator of the Black Women Oral History Project and vital force in the American storytelling renaissance, died on April 15, 2023.

“Documentation by the majority culture has not always been […] understanding of minority life and culture,” Hill writes in her introduction to The Black Women Oral History Project. “Oral history […] says to someone, ‘Tell me your story.’ ‘Sing me your song.’” Storytelling was a historical, liberatory practice for Hill, one that could preserve the untold stories of women of color.

After earning a BS in biological sciences from UMass and a library science degree from Simmons College, she soon found her professional calling as the Oral History Coordinator at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute’s Schlesinger Library.

“Ruth Hill championed the lives of women in the archives,” says her Schlesinger Library colleague and friend Joanne Donovan. During Hill’s 40 years there, she oversaw the groundbreaking Black Women Oral History project, the Cambodian-American Women Oral History project, the Latina Oral History project, and others. These collections fill a gap in the history books that all too often overlook the experiences of women of color.

Her belief in the transformational effects of storytelling went far beyond the archives. “Ruth also built community by hosting meetings and mentoring a long list of young people,” says Donovan. Hill, with her husband Hugh Morgan Hill (known as the storyteller Brother Blue), hosted a famed storytelling night that ran for 18 years. Their dedication is honored by Northeast Storytelling’s annual Brother Blue and Ruth Hill Award.

Her legacy lives on in the Schlesinger Library’s exhibit dedicated to her memory, In Their Own Lives: Black Women’s Lives from the Archives, and in her archival collections that will inspire scholarship far into the future.
