A small child on a wooden tree swing in the summer

In a quiet field in North Amherst, not far from Orchard Hill and the Sylvan Residential Area, is a special spot that just might make your day—a wooden swing that looks like it was plucked right out of The Secret Garden.

Hanging from a massive oak tree behind the Arthur F. Kinney Center for Interdisciplinary Renaissance Studies, the swing provides a moment of respite for passersby who wish to take advantage. It was likely installed by a community member, says Michael R. Aldrich ’02, interim director of Grounds Services, though its exact origins remain a mystery. One thing is for certain, though: This swing will add a little childlike whimsy to any visitor’s day.
