What advice would you give to your college-aged self?
“The first week I arrived at UMass Amherst, there was an LGBTQ dance, drums playing at the New Africa House, and the UMass band practicing, and I created a map to get to my classes that included miles of walking. I knew I was at the right place! I learned as much outside the classroom as inside!” —Laura McKenna ’80
“Don’t be afraid to sign up for something that interests you. Same with activities. You need to enlarge your social circle and find people with similar interests. Enjoy college! Go to games and performances.
P.S. Don’t accept rides from strangers.”
—Jean Langley ’74
“Slow down and enjoy the moment. Looking back on my UMass years, I now realize that they were the best years of my life—newfound freedom mixed with no responsibilities (other than studying). Thankfully, both of my daughters have attended UMass Amherst, and I have given them this advice.” —Jamie (Gornstein) Tighe ’93
“Flexibility is key in life. My intention when seeking a graduate degree was very, very different than the path I took in life. Remember: The best-laid plans will change ... and the final path may be a superior one.” —Joël Pointon ’76MS
“Keep a diary. When you are 51, your only regret from these four years will be that you don’t remember every single day of it.” —Emily Gold Boutilier ’96
