Fall Online Room Selection

The Single and Shared process is being extended. Appointment request is available until April 6.

Every student planning to live on campus must complete the following steps on SPIRE under Main Menu>Residential Life:

  1. Sign the latest version of the Residence Hall Contract
  2. Resubmit the Housing Profile
  3. Request an appointment* on the Room Selection Home page
  4. Select an available space when their appointment begins

*Students who apply for and are accepted into an application based community will be given an appointment. All other students must request their own appointment. If you miss the appointment request deadline, you will not be eligible for that process and may not be guaranteed housing for fall.  Please contact our office as soon as possible for later selection options.

Students can only select an assignment as part of one process.  Once a student has selected an assignment for fall, they will not be eligible to use another process until the Summer Change Process.  Students who select an assignment are subject to the Cancellation Fee Schedule.

Defined Residential Communities
Application Due: February 16, 2020

CHCRC Room Selection
This process is available to all members of the Commonwealth Honors College in good standing.  Rising Sophomores will receive priority consideration for CHCRC suites.  Rising Juniors and Seniors will receive priority consideration for Apartment spaces.  As of Wednesday, March 11th, any student with an active CHCRC Room Selection appointment will be able to search for any vacant space int he Commonwealth Honors College Residential Community.

Processes Open to all On-Campus Students

North Apartment Group Selection
*** This process is intended for groups of 4 students who plan to live together in a North Apartment for Fall 2020.  After appointments post on March 4th, students will have until 4:00pm on March 6th to form their groups.  Appointments will be cancelled for any student who is not part of a 4-person group as of this time.  Any remaining North Apartment vacancies will be available in the Multi Year Room Selection Process. ***

Single and Shared Room Selection
All standard single and shared spaces, Sylvan suite spaces and remaining spaces from previous processes will be available.  CHC students in good standing who have not selected an assignment will also receive a separate appointment for remaining unselected spaces in CHCRC.

Assignment Change Processes

Summer Swap Process
Application Available: May 7, 2020 - May 18, 2020

Students who are in like assignments (shared to shared, apartment to apartment, single in the same hall to single in the same hall) for the fall can complete a person to person swap. This form can be found in SPIRE under Main Menu>Residential Life>Room Swap. 

Steps for completing a swap:

1. One student will enter the information of the student they would like to swap with.  You will be asked to confirm the identity of the student by providing their UMass Email address.
2. The other student will receive an email notification that they have been invited to a swap.  Once you receive this, navigate to the Room Swap panel in SPIRE.  You will have the choice to either approve or decline the swap request.
3. Students accepting the swap request will automatically have their fall 2020 assignment updated.  Students who decline will not be moved and cancel the swap.  If the swap was declined in error, a new swap request will need to be sent to complete the swap.

Please note that if a student cancels their assignment after a room swap has been completed, the other student will be returned to their previous fall 2020 housing assignment.

Summer Pull-In Process
Application Available Here: May 7, 2020 - May 18, 2020

Students who are in a room with a vacant space for the fall can pull another on-campus student into the space with them.  This form will be available as a link on this page.

To complete a pull-in, both students must complete the Pull-In Form.  Please note that you must be logged into your UMass google account to access the form.  Students who are not logged into their UMass google account will receive an error that says that access is denied.  Once both students have completed the form.  Residential Life Student Services staff will review your request within 3 business days.  Assignments will be automatically updated if the pull in has been approved and both students will be notified by email.

Please note that if the person pulling another student into the space later cancels their assignment, the pulled in student may be returned to their original fall assignment.

Summer Change Process
Appointment Request: April 21 - June 2, 2020 (Rolling Requests through June 30th)
Appointments Post: June 4, 2020 by 3:00pm
Room Selection: June 5 - July 1st, 2020 at 4:00pm

Students with fall assignments are eligible to request an appointment for the Summer Change process. Any open spaces after cancellations are processed will available to select in this process. 

August Change Process
Appointment Request: August 7 - August 10, 2020 (Rolling Requests through August 13th)
Appointments Post: August 11, 2020 by 3:00pm
Room Selection: August 12 - August 14, 2020 at 4:00pm

Late Unassigned Room Selection

Appointment Request: August 11 - August 16, 2020 (Rolling Requests through August 25)
Appointments Post: August 18, 2020 by 3:00pm
Room Selection: August 19 - August 26, 2020 at 4:00pm

Unassigned Students

By the Residence Hall Contract, Residential Life is required to meet demand from on-campus students before we are able to offer options to students who are currently living off campus.  Unassigned students interested in securing on campus housing are able to participate in the Unassigned Room Selection process in August.  Please note that only students with less than 27 credits are guaranteed a space in this process.

Gender-Inclusive Housing
View options for gender-inclusive housing and a list of gender-inclusive bathrooms in residence halls. Also, Residential Life is required to assign students based on the gender marker listed in SPIRE.  Students can change their gender marker for assignment purposes and the name that appears on campus records by completing the form located here.  To ensure that students see the appropriate spaces in Fall 2020 Online Room Selection, we encourage anyone planning to submit this form to do so by February 24th, 2020
