Fall Online Room Selection

Every student planning to live on campus must complete the following steps on SPIRE under Main Menu>Residential Life:

  1. Sign the latest version of the Residence Hall Contract
  2. Resubmit the Housing Profile
  3. Request an appointment* on the Room Selection Home page
  4. Select an available space when their appointment begins

*Students who apply for and are accepted into an application based community will be given an appointment. All other students must request their own appointment. If you miss the appointment request deadline, you will not be eligible for that process and may not be guaranteed housing for fall.  Please contact our office as soon as possible for later selection options.

Students can only select an assignment as part of one process.  Once a student has selected an assignment for fall, they will not be eligible to use another process until the Summer Change Process.  Students who select an assignment are subject to the Cancellation Fee Schedule.

Priority for Fall 2021 Room Selection

This fall, many first year students who would have experienced on campus housing for the first time did not get that opportunity.  In an effort to support these students, fall 2020-spring 2021 admitted students and projected sophomores will receive priority consideration to select on campus spaces for fall 2021, followed by Juniors (fall 2019-spring 2020 admitted students), then Seniors.

Fall Room Selection Processes

Defined Residential Communities
Appointments Post: April 6 by 3:00pm
Room Selection: April 7 – April 9

Students who previously applied to join the following Defined Residential Communities and confirmed their interest for fall 2021 will receive a separate appointment to select a space in their community of choice:

-Asian/Asian American Student Community
-Harambee: African/African-American Heritage Community
-El Bario: Latinx Student Community
- Spectrum: LGBTQIA+ Student Community

All spaces in these communities are single, double or triple occupancy traditional residence hall rooms.  Any unselected spaces in these communities will be available in the Fall 2021 Room Selection process. 

Students who choose not to select an assignment using their DRC appointment must request an appointment for Fall 2021 Online Room Selection if they wish to live on campus.

Commonwealth Honors College Residential Community
Appointment Request: March 30 – April 9, 2021 at 11:59PM 
Appointments Post: April 13, 2021 by 3:00PM
Room Selection: April 15 – April 23, 2021 at 4:00 PM

This process is available to all members of the Commonwealth Honors College in good standing and who request an appointment for Fall Room Selection.  When Fall 2021 Room Selection appointments post, eligible students will receive a separate appointment which will include all available CHCRC spaces based on their class year.  The following types of spaces will be available in this process:

  • Projected Sophomores will see single and double occupancy rooms in CHCRC suites
  • Projected Juniors and Seniors will see single and double occupancy rooms in CHCRC apartments and the 4th and 5th floors of North D (CHCRC Break Housing Option)

Please Note: Historically more students are eligible for this process than there are spaces in the community.  Based on this, unselected CHCRC spaces will not be available in the Fall Room Selection process.  The next opportunity to secure spaces in CHCRC will be during fall in-semester change processes.

Fall 2021 Room Selection (all other housing options)
Appointment Request:  March 30 – April 9, 2021 at 11:59PM
Appointments Post: April 13, 2021 by 3:00PM
Room Selection: April 14 – April 23, 2021 at 4:00 PM

This process is available to all current Undergraduate students projected to be active in fall 2021 and who request an appointment for Fall 2021 Online Room Selection.  The following types of spaces will be available in this process:

  • Single, double and triple occupancy rooms in traditional residence halls
  • Single and double occupancy rooms in suites
  • Single occupancy rooms in the North Apartments

Please note: Students who are projected to graduate before fall 2021 are not eligible for this process.  If you are currently projected to graduate but believe you will be an active student in the fall, please update your graduation term in SPIRE.  

Residential Life is required to offer selection opportunities to all current and new undergraduate students before spaces can be offered to other students.  Based on this, Residential Life is not able to offer housing options to other students until all Undergraduate student demand has been met.  Please check with Residential Life Student Services in mid-July if you are interested in living on campus for fall 2021.

Late Appointment Requests
Students who missed the appointment request deadline and are still interested in securing on-campus housing, can log in to SPIRE and request a Late Fall 2021 Room Selection Appointment.  More students requested an on-time appointment than there are available spaces on campus for fall 2021.  While we do not expect every student to select a space, all on-time students will have the opportunity to select an assignment before students who requested a late appointment will receive an appointment.

Room Selection: April 22 – April 23, 2021 at 4:00 PM

Unassigned Room Selection Process
The next opportunity for unassigned students to secure an on campus assignment will take place in July after all new transfer students have been assigned.  Any available spaces will come from cancellations and we are not able to guarantee unassigned students will be able to secure a space.  Based on that we strongly encourage students without an assignment to begin researching off campus options.

Appointment Request: July 12, 2021 - July 20, 2021
Appointments Post: July 22, 2021 by 3:00pm
Room Selection: July 23, 2021 - August 17, 2021 at 4:00 PM

Summer Change Opportunities

Students will have opportunities to change their fall housing assignment over the summer, including a swap process and an online room selection process.  In order to be eligible for these processes, students must select an assignment before the Fall 2021 Online Room Selection processes end on April 23.

Summer Change Process
Students who wish to change their fall 2021 assignment can request an appointment for the Summer Change process. New spaces are added regularly during the process as we take cancellations throughout the summer. 

Appointment Request: April 26, 2021 - June 2, 2021
Appointments Post: June 3, 2021 by 3:00PM
Room Selection: June 4 – June 25, 2021 at 4:00 PM

Summer Swap
Students who are in like assignments (shared to shared, apartment to apartment, single in the same hall to single in the same hall) for the fall can complete a person to person swap. This form can be found in SPIRE under Main Menu>Residential Life>Room Swap during the process.
