John McCarthy is Distinguished University Professor and Provost Emeritus. He served as Provost & Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs for five years, from 2017 to 2022. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1992, was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2005, and was elected a Fellow of the Linguistic Society of America (2011), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2015), and the Cognitive Science Society (2016). His research focuses on phonology, Optimality Theory, and the Semitic languages. Further information can be found at:,
