More than predicting the next word: cross-linguistic case studies

Abstract:

Understanding the role that prediction plays in incremental language comprehension is a major goal of modern psycholinguistic research. Many researchers investigate prediction through the lens of word predictability. In this talk I'll present some results that suggest that prediction occurs above the lexical level and argue that models focusing on word predictability give an incomplete account of sentence processing.
