Two case studies on the relationship between prosody and meaning

In this talk I’ll present the outcomes (and open questions) of two recent projects. After a brief introduction to prosody (broadly construed), the first part of the talk concerns prosodic differences between information-seeking and rhetorical questions in German (and a comparison to English, Icelandic, Persian and standard Chinese). The second part concerns the online processing of narrow focus constituents (with different accent types) as compared to broad focus utterances using the visual-world eye-tracking paradigm.
