Student News, Faculty News

UMass Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning (LARP) Professor Robert Ryan and Mohammed Abdelaal, a project manager for UMass Facilities and Campus Services who recently earned a PhD in Planning from LARP, published a new study in the Planning for Higher Education journal.

Ryan and Abdelaal spent over three years researching the risks faced by university campuses, such as declining student enrollment, funding uncertainty, and rising facilities costs. Their article, “A New Campus Planning Paradigm Emerges,” explores how major public research universities in the U.S. are adapting to address those risks. Ultimately, Ryan and Abdelaal identify a new campus planning paradigm that emphasizes adaptability, efficiency, data-dependency, and space optimization.

Ryan and Abdelaal’s article, which was published for members in the Aug.-Oct. edition of Planning for Higher Education, will soon be accessible to UMass community members via the UMass Libraries.
