Program Mission Statement
The University of Massachusetts Amherst Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning (LARP) provides sustainable solutions to complex problems. We educate outstanding students, serve diverse communities, and undertake influential scholarship. We seek to exemplify a new generation of professionals and educators who work collaboratively across disciplines and cultures. This provides leadership to find regenerative, equitable and beautiful designs, spatial and social practices.
The Master’s of Landscape Architecture (MLA) Program provides an excellent and professionally-accredited education and training in the discipline of landscape architecture. Students learn the fundamentals of the theory and practice of landscape architecture, including the history, principles, techniques, and materials of landscape design. Social and environmental sustainability is at the heart of everything we teach: we create sustainable planning and landscape design solutions to the most vital problems of the twenty-first century, including global urbanization, climate change, and other social and environmental issues as they relate to the built environment.

The first Professional MLA degree at the University of Massachusetts is accredited by the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board (LAAB). The most recent review was in Spring 2023 and the next accreditation review is scheduled for Spring of 2029.
