Political science and journalism double major Konah Brownell's summer research concerned the recent rise in journalistic unions and their efforts to protect the intellectual labor of journalists. Konah and her mentor, Professor Kelsey Whipple, aimed to understand the nuances of why so many newsrooms were unionizing at the same time, what their goals were, the strategies they implemented to achieve these goals, the barriers they encountered, and what changes, if any, have occurred as a result of these unions. Konah assembled a list of 23 local and national news unions across the country and collected over 3,000 tweets published by these unions in the past year, coding the messages for recurring themes, issues, and practices across different unions. She says that the program equipped her with competence in technical research skills such as quantitative coding and with the procedure for developing a codebook, as well as multitasking and being able to understand the different power structures that exist in the journalism industry, should she chooses to pursue a career in that field.
