What was the last thing you read/watched that broke conventions for you, and made you think, “I didn’t know we were allowed to do this in writing?”
FOOD WARS. I saw it. Then I saw it again. And now I’m probably stuck in some sort of infinite re-watching loop. It’s just so deliciously weird. And it makes these delightfully horrifying rhetorical choices that shouldn’t work BUT OH MAN THEY DO. I never knew how much I needed detailed and highly hyperbolic food-tasting montages until this show. It’s also somehow wholesome and inappropriate at the same time. And I really appreciate that.
What helps you return to a project after you’ve lost momentum or haven’t worked on it in a while?
I like reading or watching shows for inspiration. Going on walks helps a lot too. But recently brainstorming with my partner has been the absolute best for my lost momentum. It’s just soooo helpful to be able to bounce ideas off of her and get caught up in the moment of exploring this world (the world of my novel) together.
What are some of your 2021 writing goals?
Whelp. I need to finish my novel. That’s for sure. I also want to be less hard on myself. It’s ironic how easy it is for us writers (and creatives) to be so hard on ourselves. So, I’m trying to find paths for self-compassion while also pushing myself to work when it’s hard. I’ve got a lot of anxiety and some health stuff, so now isn’t a great time for my creative brain. So much space is being taken up by stress and I’m just on this weird writing journey trying to figure out a balance between doing important work, taking care of myself, and making sure others in my life are ok too. And, honestly, I’m sort of failing at all three. But I’m also trying. So I guess that’s another goal: to keep trying.
