What was the last thing you read/watched that broke conventions for you, and made you think, “I didn’t know we were allowed to do this in writing?”
Missy Elliott's music videos. A lot of Missy's work is about embracing the impossible as a means to explore what lives we might build in another world from this one. She often opens with impossible or unreal scenes in her videos and they just get more and more wild from there. Missy Elliott's work makes me consider and want to experiment with what can happen when we begin with the impossible thing.
What helps you return to a project after you’ve lost momentum or haven’t worked on it in a while?
Normally, if I have put something down it is at least in part because I need some alternate ways to see or understand the subject matter. I trust that I'll return when I'm ready and in the meantime read essays, listen to artist talks, watch tv shows or documentaries that might give me new ways to see.
What are some of your 2021 writing goals?
LOL. Have been writing very little. I'm supposed to have a book manuscript together to graduate my program though so making that happen is a goal for sure.
