Meet Jacob Knowlton, a senior Journalism major, who found that his experiences within the department prepared him for a successful future in journalism.
How has the UMass Journalism Department shaped you into the journalist you are today and helped prepare you for your future career?
The UMass Journalism Department helped guide the way for me. As a transfer student, I had not had many previous journalism class opportunities, so I used my time to experience all types of writing courses within the department. It allowed me a chance to enjoy all kinds of writing and helped develop my voice.
What have been your most impactful journalism classes or professors, and why?
Sports Journalism classes helped give me a taste of what industry I could pursue. I learned a lot from Professor Steve Fox due to his vast knowledge of the journalism world. Other professors like Greeley Kyle, Dr. Kelsey Whipple, and Carol Connare introduced me to new types of multimedia journalism such as broadcasting, behind-the-scenes work, arts and culture journalism, and food writing. These professors used their experience to help paint a picture of what I could be doing in the future.
Which student media organizations or university clubs were you a part of, and how have you been involved?
I wasn't an active part of student organizations, but I wrote a story for the Amherst Wire during my first semester. I lived at home and needed to work weekly, so I could never find the time to be more involved. It's the thing I regret most, but I plan to make more time for the things that interest me in the future.
What are your points of pride, accomplishments, or the skills you developed that you are proud of most?
Developing my writer's voice and taking the opportunity to try all different types of writing helped me realize that I enjoy so much more than just writing about sports. I pride myself on my versatility which I did not have when I first got to UMass.
What are your most memorable UMass experiences as a journalism student?
The most memorable experience was talking with guest speakers and meeting people from various industries, such as sportswriters, producers, reviewers, fashion writers, sports authors, and many more. They all helped me understand the industry and what I wanted to pursue.
What advice would you give to the next class of journalism students?
Get involved. Since my first year was remote, and I lived at home and spent a lot of time working, I had little time to get involved with student media. But I think students should try to make time to do such things.
What are your plans after graduation?
I plan to look for a job and will try to find opportunities to write and build up a better portfolio of work. Hopefully, that will lead to something good. I have a good base now, but I need to expand it more.
What is your dream job?
My dream job is to be a full-time writer for the Boston Celtics. Basketball has always been my favorite sport, and even if it isn't the Celtics, I would love the opportunity to write about the NBA.
