Internship: University Life and Wellbeing Department of Communications Intern
What drew you to your internship before applying for it? Which interests aligned with the type of work you would be doing?
I always wanted to work in a non-profit space, and I always had an interest in making a difference. Overall, I care about the student community. Coming into this work, it must align with your values and interests, so you can feel proud of the work you're doing.
How was the application process?
I emailed my resume and cover letter to the Campus Life & Wellbeing Collaborative, and within 3 weeks, I had an interview and was offered the position.
What previous experience prepared you for the interview?
I previously worked with the university marketing team for over a year. I was already familiar with student work programs and UMass as a whole through my student and work experience as well.
What did your first days look like in the internship in comparison to your last? What were some of the things you learned?
During my first day, I went in and I met my manager. We got to know each other, and we discussed expectations, and then there were a lot of onboarding and orientation activities. Currently, I’m more autonomous in the job since working with the team in September. I know how things are supposed to go and what's expected of me. I make a content calendar on my own, and there are fewer people to run things by. I'm seen as an expert in communications.
Was there anything about your internship that surprised you? Things you didn’t expect?
I expected more guidance, but I've had to figure things out on my own and create work by myself– which, in the long run, is beneficial because it increases self-sufficiency.
What are some of the things you learned from your internship? How did it inform your long-term career goals?
I have learned a lot about calendar content management and different ways we can use social media to build community and solve real-world issues. I would love to do something like this in the future, where I'm doing work that matters. Communication is more than just social media, it's about building relationships
What advice would you give to someone applying for this internship in the future?
Don’t be worried, dont get nervous. Interviewing and applying could be nerve-wracking, but managers are people too and they are just like you. I would also advise taking risks since this is how you break into the industry.
