The UMass Journalism Department invites rising high school juniors and seniors to apply to our first-ever free Summer Journalism Institute. From July 8 to July 14, 2018, fifteen accepted students will learn how to report, write and publish work like a journalist with UMass Journalism professors while staying in the UMass Honors College dorms in Amherst. This year’s topic will be stories of immigration in Massachusetts and beyond.

The program welcomes applications from rising junior and senior Massachusetts high school students. Priority for admission will be for students from underrepresented groups, including low-income students, students of color, and prospective first-generation college students.

Applicants are not required to have to have a background in high school journalism, but they should be enthusiastic about the news and using their voice to tell stories through writing and multimedia journalism.

“We are hoping to provide students with the chance to really explore the ins and outs of journalism and an opportunity for students from communities that are often underrepresented to have a voice in their own narrative,” said Professor Shaheen Pasha.

Over the week, students will produce original stories while learning core journalistic skills like interviewing, writing and multimedia production. They will also visit local digital newsrooms and talk about strategies for college success.

Interested students can apply online or download and return a paper copy of the application. The deadline for applications is May 25, 2018.
