Mackenzie Issler, class of 2007, is a reporter at The News-Times/Hearst Connecticut Media Group in Danbury, Connecticut, covering health, human services and immigration. Previously she was a reporter for Newsday, covering the town of Huntington, which has about 225,000 people. She focused on local politics and government, with an eye toward accountability. She graduated from Columbia University School of Journalism in 2012, where she focused on investigative journalism. She wrote her thesis on the women's prison in Haiti and the issue of prolonged and illegal detention there and the U.S. culpability in it all. She went to Haiti for three weeks, which included two visits to the prison. For four years, she worked at The Recorder in Greenfield, Mass., where she was the education, health and human services reporter.
