Building a Responsible Approach to Technology
The goal of this certificate is to give students a background in PIT through the opportunity to develop their knowledge in (1) key public interest areas such as ethics, equity, privacy, and others; (2) social governance mechanisms that can be applied to control technological directions; and (3) a deeper knowledge in a specific information technology area of particular interest to the student.
This certificate is one key educational initiative of the broader PIT@UMass Initiative, an all-campus research, education and community-building program involving faculty and students from each major college and school. Learn more about student PIT clubs here. PIT@UMass also co-leads the broader PIT-New England network that is actively working to build PIT-related partnerships across the region.
The certificate is comprised of 15 credits including a foundation course, three electives, and a capstone course:
The certificate requires one foundation course, CICS 127: Introduction to Public Interest Technology.
Students can choose three electives, from each of three areas: Social Governance, Public Interest Focus, and Technical Literacy. Learn more.
An approved capstone course bookends the curriculum by providing students with experience with a PIT-related real-world application.
