Developed by UMass Amherst’s School of Public Policy, the College of Information and Computer Sciences, and the IT Program in partnership with the Public Interest Technology Initiative, this program reflects a campus-wide commitment to socially responsible tech education.
This certificate is one key educational initiative of the broader PIT@UMass Initiative, an all-campus research, education and community-building program involving faculty and students from each major college and school. What You’ll Learn
Through two required core courses and one elective, participants will gain:
- A foundational understanding of public interest technology frameworks and their application in and by government, business, and civil society.
- Insight into core regulatory frameworks shaping technology innovation in the USA, EU and the Global South.
- Practical tools for technology assessment, policy analysis, and human-centered design.
- Skills to lead socially responsible tech projects and assess risks across the product lifecycle.
- Access to specialists and a community of peers.
Core Topics Include:
- Responsible artificial intelligence governance
- Emerging trends in technology policy and regulation
- Equity and inclusion in digital transformation
- Ethical design and public participation in technology
- The role of technology in advancing social justice

Program Structure
- Total Credits: 9 (minimum of three 600-level courses (two required and one elective)
- Format: 100% online, with the flipped classroom methodology deployed for the two obligatory courses, guest speakers, weekly meet-ups, and various community-building activities!
- Term: Flexible starting time, with obligatory courses offered in the Fall and Winter 2025, and electives from Fall 2025 to Spring 2026. Fall and spring courses run for 14 to 15 weeks, winter intensive courses run for 6 to 7 weeks.
- Weekly Dedication: Varies by course. The two obligatory courses (SPP 690G and SPP 690T) require up to 5 hours of dedication for recorded and bibliographic materials review and in-person meet-ups.
