The Public Interest Elective includes courses that foster a deep understanding of critical public interest issues such as fairness, equity, ethics, privacy, justice, sustainability, democracy, and civic engagement within the contexts of technology, media, society, and institutional practice. The Social Governance Elective includes courses that deepen students’ understanding of how diverse governance structures across law, public policy, regulation, organizational standards, civil advocacy, and ethical frameworks shape the development, deployment, and social impact of digital technology. The Digital Technology Elective includes technical and applied courses from across campus that build students’ understanding of how digital technologies are designed, constructed, and function while emphasizing the real-world effects technologies have on people, organizations, and society. Coursework integrates hands-on learning, project work, and/or critical engagement with technologies ranging from computing and engineering systems to digital media, arts, financial technology, and education. All courses focus not just on technical theory, but also on practical, socially meaningful contexts. A list of approved Digital Technology Elective courses can be found here.
