CICS is in the process of revising its introductory course sequences to provide a unified introductory programming experience for the computer science and informatics majors. This revision will replace the current set of three introductory courses COMPSCI 121, COMPSCI 186 and COMPSCI 187 with three new courses CICS 110, CICS 160 and CICS 210. A web page providing details on the content of the courses and the transition plan is available here: https://www.cics.umass.edu/content/cics-introductory-course-revision

CICS plans to phase out COMPSCI 121 and COMPSCI 186 in Spring 2023 and COMPSCI 187 in Fall 2023. For Spring 2023, students interested in computing who previously would have been directed to COMPSCI 121 will be directed to the new introductory course sequence. However, course proposals for all three new courses are currently pending faculty senate approval.

During the registration period for Spring 2023, students interested in starting the introductory programming sequence who previously would have been directed to COMPSCI 121 should be directed to register for INFO 190S. INFO 190S is the experimental course offering that is pending faculty senate approval for conversion to CICS 110. Students registered for INFO 190S this fall who would like to take the second course in the introductory sequence (Formerly CS 186) should be directed to register for INFO 190T. INFO 190T is the experimental course offering that is pending faculty senate approval for conversion to CICS 160. Students who are eligible to register for COMPSCI 187 will be able to do so as usual for Spring 2023.

As usual, the introductory sequence is recommended for CICS majors. Non-Majors should consider CS 119.
