Download Your Class and Final Exam Schedules

About Your Class and Final Exam Schedules

Students and instructors, update your calendars with your class and final exam schedules! Download your class and/or final exam schedules from SPIRE, then import them into your preferred calendaring tool (e.g., Apple iCal, Google Calendar, Microsoft Outlook).

The Class Schedule calendar file that you obtain from SPIRE contains the meeting days, times, and locations for your classes. For students it also includes instructors' names and any additional notes from the Schedule of Classes. The Class Schedule calendar file does not include:

  • Classes that do not have valid Days & Times listed in the Schedule of Classes (e.g., independent studies, online classes, etc.)
  • Academic Calendar schedule changes (e.g., classes following a Monday schedule on Tuesdays after a major holiday.)
  • Final exam information

Note: Remember to update your calendar with these events! Also check for any calendar errors after you have finished loading your schedule.

The Final Exam Schedule calendar file that you obtain from SPIRE is for the current term and contains the days, times, and locations for your final exams.

Download Your Class Schedule

  1. Students: In the SPIRE Menu, go to Student Home > Download Class Schedule.

    Instructors: In the SPIRE Menu, go to Faculty Home > Download Class Schedule.

  2. On the Download Your Class Schedule page, select a term, then click Email Class Schedule. SPIRE will send your Class Schedule calendar file to your University email address.
  3. Log in to your University email and look for a message that starts with Your semester calendar in the Subject line.
  4. From the Your semester calendar message, download the .ics attachment and save it to your desktop.

Download Your Final Exam Schedule

  1. Students: In the SPIRE Menu, go to Student Home > Download Finals Schedule.

    Instructors: In the SPIRE Menu, go to Instructor Home > Download Finals Schedule.

  2. On the Download Your Final Exam Schedule page, click Email Final Exam Schedule. SPIRE will send your Final Exam Schedule calendar file to your University email address.
  3. Log in to your University email and look for a message that starts with Your finals calendar in the Subject line.
  4. From Your finals calendar message, download the .ics attachment and save it to your desktop.

Import Your Class or Final Exam Schedules

Choose your preferred calendaring tool from the list below. The links take you to the instructions for importing your class and/or final exam schedules into your calendar using the .ics files sent to you via email.

Google Calendar (Cross-Platform)

  1. Sign in to your Apps at UMass Amherst Google Calendar.
  2. On your calendar home page, in the My Calendars area, click the Add drop-down list, then Import Calendar. The Add Other Calendar screen will open.
  3. On the Add Other Calendar screen, in the Step 1: Select File field, click Browse.... The File Upload window will open.
  4. In the File Upload window, locate and select the schedule file (.ics) you downloaded from SPIRE, then click Open. You will return to the Add Other Calendar screen.
  5. On the Add Other Calendar screen:
    • From the Step 2: Choose Calendar drop-down list, select the calendar where you would like your Class Schedule to appear.
    • Under Step 3: Complete Import, click Import. Google will confirm whether the import was successful or not.
    • Click Back to Calendar to return to your calendar home page.
  6. Use the Academic Calendar to update your class schedule with any schedule changes. Remember to add any information not included in your calendar file (e.g., meetings for independent studies, etc.).

Apple iCal (Macintosh)

Drag and drop the schedule file (.ics) you downloaded from SPIRE from your desktop to iCal.

  1. Open iCal.
  2. Go to File > Import.... The Import window will open.
  3. In the Import window, select Import an iCal file, then click Import. The iCal:Import window will open.
  4. In the iCal:Import window, locate and select the schedule file (.ics) you downloaded from SPIRE, then click Import. The Add Events window will open.
  5. In the Add Events window, select a destination for your calendar (e.g., Work). iCal will confirm whether the import was successful or not.
  6. Use the Academic Calendar to update your class schedule with any schedule changes. Remember to add any information not included in your calendar file (e.g., meetings for independent studies, etc.).

Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 (Windows)

  1. Open Outlook and go to File > Import and Export.... The Import and Export wizard window will open.
  2. In the Import and Export Wizard window, select the radio button next to Import an iCalendar (.ics) or vCalendar file (.vcs) and click Next. A Browse window will open.
  3. In the Browse window, locate and select the schedule file (.ics) you downloaded from SPIRE and click OK. A Microsoft Office Outlook window will open.
  4. On the Microsoft Office Outlook window, click Import. Your will return to Outlook and the events from your schedule will appear listed at the appropriate dates and times.
  5. Use the Academic Calendar to update your class schedule with any schedule changes. Remember to add any information not included in your calendar file (e.g., meetings for independent studies, etc.).

Mozilla Thunderbird with Lightning (Cross-Platform)

Lightning is a free calendar extension that works with the Mozilla Thunderbird email client. Note: You will have to download and install Mozilla Thunderbird before you can use Lightning.

  1. Install the Lightning extension. Instructions on how to download, install, and use Lightning, are available on the Lightning Project page: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/lightning/ .
  2. Open Thunderbird and go to Calendar > Import.... An Open window will open.
  3. In the Open window, locate and select the schedule file (.ics) you downloaded from SPIRE and click Open.
  4. You will return to Thunderbird and the events from your schedule will appear listed at the appropriate dates and times.
  5. Use the Academic Calendar to update your class schedule with any schedule changes. Remember to add any information not included in your calendar file (e.g., meetings for independent studies, etc.).
