About Credits and GPAs - for Advisors

Total Credits

Sum of credits of classes for which student received a passing grade. Once a repeated class is graded, the credits for the first instance of the class will be deducted from the total. This number appears on the student’s transcript.

Academic Requirements Report (ARR) Total Credits

On the ARR, credits for the first instance of a repeated class are deducted as soon as the student registers for a second instance of a repeated class (even if the class starts months in the future). The ARR Total Credit calculation is done to ensure students don’t over-count their credits making them unable to graduate when planned.

Grade Point Average (GPA)

The Grade Point Average on the student’s transcript, which takes into account all UMass Amherst rules.

The calculation for the GPA on the ARR deducts the credits and grade of the first instance of a repeated class when the student registers for a second instance (even if the class starts months in the future). Students should refer to their transcript for the current GPA.

Academic Requirements Report (ARR) Major GPA

Calculated on the ARR, this represents the GPA for classes associated with a student’s academic plan.
