SPSS Statistical Software

Following the university's latest contract with IBM, SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) statistical analysis software is available to UMass Amherst faculty and staff at a fraction of the retail cost (for teaching and research on university-owned machines only). 

SPSS Statistics Premium, the version of SPSS covered by the current contract, comes with many enhancements, including:

  • Availability for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux computers.
  • The Base, Advanced, and Regression modules, and over 10 additional modules, including Complex Samples, Data Preparation, Categories, and Missing Values. More...
  • The free IBM SPSS Amos add-on module for Windows. NOTE: Sample Power and Visualization Designer are no longer available.
  • A purchase fee for individual faculty and staff of $250, or 12% of the actual license cost, annually.

  • Discounts for computer classrooms and labs and separate pricing for concurrent licenses and networked environments. Please call 413-545-9400 or email software@umass.edu for eligibility.
  • An additional license for home use may be purchased for $40.

Payment

License fees may be paid by providing:

  • a departmental speed type number on the registration form
  • by check payable to the University of Massachusetts, or
  • in person in room A109 LGRC using speedtype or UCard.

SPSS for Individual Faculty & Staff

SPSS licenses are for teaching and non-commercial academic research purposes on university-owned machines only. If you are interested in purchasing multiple licenses for computer labs and other networked environments, please call 413-545-9400 or email software@umass.edu for eligibility.

Administrative Usage

Our license for IBM SPSS Statistics is limited to “Teaching and Research” usage.  Please review the definitions below to confirm that your use qualifies as Teaching and Research:

  • Teaching/Research usage is limited to Faculty engaging in non-commercial research activities, classroom instruction, and coursework directly related to the UMass's degree requirements.This includes the formulation of theses and dissertations. Non-commercial academic research means research by faculty members where the results of such research are not intended primarily for the benefit of a third party; such results are made available to anyone without restriction on use, copying or further distribution; and any copy of such result is furnished for no more than the cost of hosting, reproduction, and shipping. Any other use of the T&R license, including but not limited to university administration and operations is strictly prohibited.
  • All usage that does not fall under Teaching and Research is considered Administrative. This includes institutional research and any such use related to reporting about the University to the University. Software licensed for Administrative usage may only be used by UMass employees.

Purchase SPSS Licenses

  1. Fill out the SPSS Registration Form.

  3. Checks may be mailed to A109, Lederle Graduate Center, or brought in person. Your license will be granted when your payment is received. Payment by check, speedtype or UCard must include Massachusetts sales tax for both renewal and media fee. Contact IT at 545-TECH to determine the exact amount.
  4. Note: All software license sales are final! Read the System Requirements carefully to be sure the software will work on your system.

Renew Your SPSS License(s)

To renew your SPSS License(s), please:

  1. Fill out the Software Request Form for SPSS.

SPSS for IT Professionals

Discounts are available for computer classrooms and labs. Separate pricing applies for concurrent licenses and networked environments as well as administrative usage. Please call 413-545-9400 or email software@umass.edu for eligibility.

SPSS for Students

For students, IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows or Macintosh is available with 6 or 12 month software license through OnTheHub. Students can get SPSS Statistics Base GradPack, SPSS Statistics Standard GradPack, which includes the Advanced Statistics and Regression modules, or SPSS Statistics Premium GradPack, with many more statistical modules. The Premium Grad Pack is very similar to IT's site license but is limited to student purchase.
