To import groups already populated with students into Moodle, use the Upload / download groups block. This block will also let you download group roster information as a CSV file.

Upload Groups to Moodle

  1. Add the Upload / download groups block. See Add & Remove Blocks in Moodle.
  2. Prepare the source file:
    • Create a CSV file with two columns: EMAIL and GROUP.
    • In the EMAIL column put the UMass email of anyone you want to add to the group who is already enrolled in the course.
    • In the GROUP column put the group name, which can be an existing group in the course or a new group which will be created and populated at the same time.
  3. Save the file as a CSV.
  4. On the Upload / downloads groups block, click Upload groups.
  5. Click Choose a file and upload the CSV file.
  6. Click Submit group data.

Download Groups from Moodle

Note: The downloaded CSV file will not contain groups that start with "~" (groups automatically provisioned from SPIRE based on discussion sections, lab sections, etc.). To download group information for "~" groups, see Export Gradebook Data from Moodle.

  1. Add the Upload / download groups block. See Add & Remove Blocks in Moodle.
  2. On the Upload / downloads groups block, click Download groups. A CSV file will download containing the columns First, Last, Email, ID, and Team for each student that populates a group.
