Moodle makes it easy to reorder and move resources, activities and sections within your course. If JavaScript is enabled in your browser (recommended), you can drag-and-drop the items to a new location on the page. If JavaScript is not enabled, you can move items up or down by clicking.

Note: To move multiple items at once from one section to another section, use The Mass Actions Block in Moodle.

The Move Icons

Depending on whether JavaScript is enabled in your browser, you will see a different type of move icon next to the movable items in your course.

Use Drag and Drop to Move Items within Your Course

If JavaScript is enabled in your browser, you can drag and drop items within the Moodle course page.

  1. On your course page, click Turn editing on (green pencil icon Turn editing on (green pencil icon, top right)). Editing icons and links will appear.

  2. To move activities or resources:
Click and drag the Move icon (Moodle move icon) at the left of the item link. As you drag, Moodle will dim the items under the item you are dragging. Release the mouse to drop the item into a new location.
Note: If you are using the Collapsed topics format, to move an item into a collapsed section, first open the collapsed section by clicking on the small gray triangle above the section name.

    To move a section:
Click and drag the Move icon (Moodle move icon) at top left of the Section. As you drag over other sections, they will dim. Release the mouse to drop the section into a new location.
Note: If you are using the Collapsed topics format, you may want to first click Collapse All (above, top right of first Section), before re-ordering sections. This makes it easier to see what you're doing.

Use the Basic Move Icon to Move Items in Your Course

When JavaScript is NOT enabled in your browser the basic move icon (Basic move icon) shows for resources, activities and sections.

  1. On your course page, click Turn editing on (green pencil icon Turn editing on (green pencil icon, top right), top right). Editing icons and links will appear.

  2. Click the move icon (Basic move icon) for the item you wish to move. Moodle uses Move to here boxes to let you place items in a new location:
    • For activities and resources, Moodle will highlight the available move locations with an arrow and box. Move Arrow and Box
    • For sections, click Edit (far right of the section), then click Move Up (Move up arrow) or Move Down (Move down arrow) from the drop-down menu to move the section.

***Important Note about Section Names: When moving sections (with or without JavaScript enabled), if the section names haven’t been edited from the default “Topic #” titles, then the number in the section name will automatically change to reflect the order in which it was placed. For example, if section “Topic 1” is moved below section “Topic 4,” the section name will automatically change from “Topic 1” to “Topic 4.”  If the section names have been edited, re-ordering sections will not change the section name.***
