Moodle allows you to import a calendar using the .ics file format, or subscribe to a public online calendar. Any Moodle user, including students, can import events to show only to themselves. Instructors can import events to display for a Course or a Group within a course.

  1. In the Calendar block, click the name of the month (at top), or in the Upcoming Events block, click Go to calendar.... The Calendar page will open.
  2. Click Manage subscriptions. The Manage subscriptions page will open listing subscriptions you have already set up (if any), and a form for importing a calendar.
  3. Under Import calendar, for Calendar name, enter a name.
  4. To import a calendar from a file:
    1. From the Import from drop-down menu choose Calendar file (.ics).
    2. Click Choose a file and browse to upload an .ics file.
To subscribe to a public online calendar (e.g, Google Calendar or iCal):
    1. In a new browser window or tab, go to the online calendar and look for a link or button to subscribe and copy the calendar address.
Note: You will only find this option if the calendar is public—this includes sharing a Calendar from apps.umass.edu.
    2. Return to the Moodle Manage subscriptions page, and for Calendar URL, enter the copied address.
    3. From the Update interval drop-down menu, select how often Moodle should update your calendar from the external site.
Once subscribed, you can update the calendar at any time by clicking Update in the list at the top of the Calendar page.
  5. From the Type of event drop-down menu, select:
    • User - Only you can see this calendar's events. (User events will be colored blue.)
    • Course - Anyone enrolled in the course will be able to see this calendar's events. (Course events will be colored pink.)
    • Group -  Only members of a group in your course will be able to see this calendar's events. (Group events will be colored orange.)
Note: The Academic Calendar is added to Moodle at the system level. (University events are colored green.)
  6. If the type of event is a Group event, select a group from your course.
  7. Click Add.
