What's New in UMail on the Web

UMail will be retired in 2019 as it has reach end-of-life and will no longer be supported. Graduate students can switch to Google Mail in spring 2019. Faculty and staff will receive additional information in summer/fall 2019.

How do I select multiple messages for deletion, moving, marking as read, etc.?

To select multiple messages, while holding the Control (Ctrl) key on your keyboard (or the Command key in Mac OS X), click all the messages you would like to select. To select a large group of consecutive messages, click the first message in the group, hold the Shift key, and then select the last message in the group.

Also, at the bottom of the page is a Select dropdown, which allows you to select All (all items in the current folder), Current page (all items on the current page), Unread (all unread items), Flagged (all items that have been flagged), Invert (inverts your selection), or None (clears all selections).

Does the new interface change my old emails or email folders?

No. The new UMail on the Web interface does not change your emails or folders. You will view the same emails and folders in the new interface.

Does the new interface change the contacts from my old UMail?

No. The new UMail interface imports the contacts at first login.

Will my email address change?

No. Your email address(es) will not change. The new interface provides improved settings where you can see all of your email addresses under your account and add separate signatures if desired.

I can see emails I previously deleted that are grayed out. Why?

The old UMail on the Web interface had the 2-step option to Delete and Hide Deleted. The new UMail on the Web interface uses the familiar and almost universal Trash deletion process. You can Purge deleted from the new UMail by clicking the gear icon on the lower left and choosing Compact.

How do I permanently delete items to free up space?

First, delete messages by selecting them and then clicking Delete at the top, or dragging them to the Trash folder in the left folder navigation pane. Then, click the Trash folder to navigate to it. Select the messages you would like to permanently delete and once again, click Delete at the top. You can empty your Trash by navigating to the Trash folder and then clicking on the gear at the bottom left of the navigation pane. From the drop-down menu, select Empty. You can also permanently delete messages, skipping the Trash folder, by holding the Shift key when clicking Delete.

How do I search for email messages?

The new UMail includes a more accessible and streamlined search feature. At the top right of the page, you will see a search box. Select your search criteria by clicking on the magnifying glass drop-down menu. You can search all folders, the current folder that you are in, or the current folder along with subfolders. You can search recipients, senders, email subjects, the entire body of the message, and more. You can further refine your search using the drop-down to the left of the search box to search All messages, Unread, Deleted, messages with attachments, etc.

How do I enable the Preview Pane?

The new UMail has a Preview Pane option that allows you to see emails without having to double click or have to leave your inbox. [image of the inbox] To enable Preview Pane, click on Settings (top right) > Preferences > Mailbox View, then check off the box that says, “Show preview pane”. Click the “Save” button to save your changes.

How do I create a new signature?

To create a new signature, go to Settings (top right), and then click Identities. Select the email address you would like to change the signature for, then type your signature into the Signature box and click Save.

How do I change my Display Name?

The new UMail on the Web allows you to customize your display name. To do so go to Settings > Identities and then select the email address you want to send from by default. Next, enter the Display Name you would like, check the Set default box and click Save.

What is single sign on web login?

Once you log into one campus service that uses web login, you can use the same web browser to access other web-login-enabled services without having to log in again. For more information, see: Authentication Services
