Enroll in Two-Step Login

Duo for Two-Step Login

UMass Amherst uses Duo for two-step login (a.k.a. multi-factor authentication) for select campus services.

  • Supported Countries: If you are abroad, phone callback and text messages (SMS) to international phone numbers may or may not be available. Country List
    For U.S. phone numbers abroad, roaming needs to be enabled if you need a callback or a text message.
  • For push notifications using the Duo app, you only need an internet connection.
  • Append Mode provides an alternative solution if your device does not support the inline Duo Prompt or a secondary passcode field. Learn more about Append Mode

Enroll in Duo

Duo prompts you for a second factor (push notification, text message, or phone call) when you authenticate into a Duo-enabled service. The following steps detail the process of enrolling a device (phone, tablet, or landline) to serve as the second factor.

  1. Go to multifactor.umass.edu.
  2. Log in with your NetID and password. You are redirected to the Multi-Factor Account Management page.
  3. Click Continue to begin the process of enrolling a device with Duo.
  4. On the Protect your University of Massachusetts Amherst Account page, click Start Setup.
  5. Select the type of device you want to use with Duo, and click Continue. See instructions by device below.

 

Smartphones

  1. Enter the device’s phone number.
  2. Select the checkbox to confirm your device’s phone number, then click Continue.
  3. Select the type of phone you are enrolling (iPhone, Android, other), and click Continue.
  4. Install the Duo Mobile app for the type of device you are enrolling. See Get Duo on a Specific Device, or follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. After you have installed the app, return to the enrollment dialog on your computer screen and click I have Duo Mobile.
  6. Activate Duo with a QR code or via email.
    • Activate Duo Mobile with a QR code:
      1. Open the Duo Mobile app on your device.
      2. In the Duo Mobile app, tap the + icon.
      3. Capture the QR code displayed on the Activate Duo Mobile dialog box on your computer screen with your device. The Continue button is highlighted.
      4. Click Continue. Your University of Massachusetts Amherst account is now listed in the Duo Mobile app.
    • Activate Duo Mobile via email:
      1. Click Or, have an activation link emailed to you instead.
      2. Enter an email address that you can check on your device, then click Send email.
      3. Log into your UMass email and locate the email sent from Duo Security. (Note: You will need to perform the following steps on the device you are enrolling and that you installed the Duo Mobile app on).
      4. Tap the link in the email.
      5. Tap Open to open the page in Duo Mobile. This step may vary by device. The Duo Mobile app will open, and your University of Massachusetts Amherst account is now listed.
      6. Return to the Activate Duo Mobile by Email dialog on your computer screen. The Continue button is highlighted in green.
      7. Click Continue.
  7. You are redirected to the My Settings & Devices page. On this page you can:
    • Change the device name under Device Options.
    • Reactivate Duo Mobile if you delete your account from the Duo Mobile app under Device Options.
    • Change the preferred default device for authentication.
    • Set the default authentication method.
      Note: Make sure to click Save if you make any changes.
  8. Click Continue to Login when you are finished editing. You will see the following message: Enrollment successful!

 

Tablets

  1. Select the type of tablet you are enrolling (iOS or Android), and click Continue.
  2. Install the Duo Mobile app for the type of device you are enrolling. See Get Duo on a Specific Device, or follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. After you have installed the app, return to the enrollment dialog on your computer screen and click I have Duo Mobile.
  4. Activate Duo with a QR code or via email.

      1. Open the Duo Mobile app on your device.
      2. In the Duo Mobile app, tap the + icon.

  1. Enter the landline’s phone number (the full number with area code).
  2. Select the checkbox to confirm the phone number.
  3. Click Continue.
  4. You are redirected to the My Settings & Devices page. On this page you can:
    • Change the device name under Device Options.
    • Reactivate Duo Mobile if you delete your account from the Duo Mobile app under Device Options.
    • Change the preferred default device for authentication.
    • Set the default authentication method.
