Computing Account Definitions

Your UMass Amherst IT Account provides you with access to a wide range of computing services at UMass Amherst. Access to these services is considered a privilege. You have certain rights and responsibilities when using your account.

  • UMass Amherst IT provides each individual client with one primary computing account and associated NetID (IT Account user name).
  • An account includes all of the services associated with your particular NetID (IT Account user name).
  • Each account includes one electronic mailbox for email.
  • You must activate your account with UMass Amherst IT in order to have access to it.
  • You are responsible for ensuring the security of your IT account by treating your NetID (IT Account user name) and passwords as private information, not to be shared with friends and family.
  • You are responsible for managing your own account (e.g., disk space) within the limits of resources provided by UMass Amherst IT.
  • Students, RAs, TAs and interns may have only one account or NetID (IT Account user name).
  • Active UMass faculty and staff may request an additional (secondary/subsidary) account if they have special needs. For inquiries, please contact the UMass Amherst IT Help Center (413-545-9400 (option 1), A109 Lederle Graduate Research Center (LGRC) Lowrise, M - F, 8:30 a.m. - 4:45 p.m.).
  • Faculty, staff and students are limited to one, and only one, primary account with network access. Secondary accounts do not allow you to connect to the wireless or wired Ethernet networks.

Electronic Mailbox and Email Addresses

  • Undergraduate students may only have one email address (
  • All other UMass Amherst IT email addresses take the form of, where name may or may not be the NetID (IT Account user name).
  • Individuals who have UMass email addresses which are not managed by UMass Amherst IT, but are managed by another UMass department (ECS, CS, BIO, etc.) can ask to have those addresses listed in the UMass email directory by sending a message to
  • Only one University email address will be published in the University directory; this is the address to which official University information is sent.
  • Non-University email addresses will not be published in the University directory. Individuals who prefer to use a non-University email service as their primary email source should set forwarding from theirUMass Amherst IT email service to ensure that all official University correspondence reaches them.
