UMass Amherst Information Technology (UMass IT) is aware of a new threat where scammers claiming to be with the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) will contact individuals and say they have won NSF grant money, which can be claimed for a fee.
In an announcement about the scam, the NSF stated there is a long-standing merit review process before awards are issued to ensure grants and other funds are not awarded for personal use.
Further, the NSF will never:
- Make initial contact by phone to an individual to say they have won a grant from NSF.
- Request an individual pay a fee to claim a grant award.
- Request information upfront by phone or email, including personal bank account, Social Security number, or other personally identifiable information.
The Information Security team urges anyone who encounters this scam - or other threats - to report it to @email. Additionally, if you have encountered this scam, the NSF is recommending making a report to the Federal Trade Commission. If you have any questions related to NSF Funding, please reach out to the UMass Amherst Office of Research & Engagement.
