How do you make campus technology work better for students? At UMass Amherst Information Technology (UMass IT), the answer is simple: ask the students themselves.
This semester, UMass Amherst IT is welcoming the Fall 2025 cohort of IT Student Ambassadors — ten students who will bring their ideas and lived experiences to the table as the university continues improving campus technology.
Ambassadors connect directly with peers at campus events and online, helping raise awareness of IT resources while gathering feedback about what’s working and what isn’t. They also collaborate with IT staff on high-impact services like Canvas and SPIRE so that the student voice is part of every stage of development and improvement.
“The ambassador program gives us a direct line to student experiences with technology,” said Monica Kane, associate vice chancellor for information technology. “The insights they share help us better understand what students need day to day, and that makes our services stronger.”
In addition to shaping campus technology, the program introduces students to career pathways in IT. Ambassadors gain professional experience, connect with mentors, and have opportunities to step into IT-related internships and other roles that build early career skills.
The Fall 2025 cohort represents a wide range of disciplines and interests, from engineering and computer science to English, business, and design. Beyond the classroom, they bring a multitude of interests — dance, swimming, poetry, hiking — reflecting the many perspectives that will inform the way technology supports learning and community life at UMass.
