On Wednesday, January 10, 2024, UMass Amherst Information Technology (IT) will implement additional security controls that will impact how to remotely access university computers and servers. Changes to how users access Secure Shell Protocol (SSH) will be made to reduce risks to university computers and data by further limiting remote access from the Internet.

Campus community members who use Virtual Private Network (VPN), Secure Shell (SSH/SCP), etc. should know:

  • A VPN connection will be required when accessing SSH from off-campus as of January 10, 2024.
  • Only inbound SSH/SCP connections from the Internet will be affected at this time.
  • The VPN service itself is not changing.

If a service your team manages needs an exception to allow SSH from off-campus because VPN cannot be used, please submit an exception request in ServiceNow no later than January 2, 2024. The Information Security team will work to assess the requests and risks.
