Repointing MX Records from Two Email Domains - Tues., 01/17

January 13, 2023On Tuesday, January 17th, 2023, UMass Amherst Information Technology (IT) will re-point the MX records from two email domains – and - from our on-premises mail servers to Office365. We will be repointing additional email domains in batches through the end of February 2023.   Members of the campus community should not notice any impact related to these changes.  

IT Authenticated SMTP Service For Outgoing Email to be Retired - Tues., 01/17

UMass Amherst Information Technology (IT) will be retiring the UMass IT authenticated SMTP service for outgoing emails ( on Tuesday, January 17th, 2023. Users of this service should use SMTP settings from Google or Office365 going forward. Both Google and Office365 SMTP require clients that support Modern Authentication - Basic Authentication is no longer supported.

Planned Maintenance: SPIRE & Other IT Services Unavailable – Thurs., 01/12

January 5, 2023On Thursday, January 12th, 2023, from 6-10 PM, many services including SPIRE, UMass Amherst email (Microsoft and Google), campus internet connectivity (eduroam/wired access), Virtual Private Network (VPN), and other services will be unavailable while Information Technology (IT) performs important maintenance. This maintenance is necessary to ensure the smooth operation of university services during the Spring 2023 semester.   Impacted Services:

RESOLVED: Blackboard Grade Submission Issues - Tue., 12/27

10:58 a.m.

The grade submission issues reported earlier have been resolved. Instructors can now import grades from Blackboard into SPIRE.

8:20 a.m.

UMass Amherst Information Technology (IT) is currently investigating issues related to grade submissions from Blackboard to SPIRE. Instructors may get an error when attempting to import grades from Blackboard in SPIRE. Grades submitted from Blackboard since Saturday, December 24, 2022 at 8 a.m. may not appear in SPIRE at this time. More updates will be posted as they become available. 

SPIRE Performance Issues Resolved - Weds,. 12/14

On Wednesday, December 14 around 11:15 a.m., UMass Amherst Information Technology resolved issues affecting SPIRE availability and performance. 
We are continuing to monitor SPIRE availability and performance to prevent further issues.
